Marketing with Pinterest

Pinterest is a social media app that I honestly don't really think of as social media. But people can post and create boards and find lots of creative ideas on the app. The idea is that you can "pin" ideas that you like to your board. Like an online scrapbook or idea board. Honestly, I do use Pinterest a lot. I have boards for haircuts, hairstyles and hair colors I like. I have them for fashion and outfit inspiration. I have Halloween costumes boards, makeup inspiration, room decoration, and ideas for a photo wall/collage. I've never actually posted anything myself though.

Pinterest was created in 2009 and the growth was slow at first, but by 2011 it was one of the top 10 most prominent social networking types. Pinterest now has 465 million monthly users.

When it comes to marketing with Pinterest, in my experience, I have never bought something because I saw it advertised on Pinterest. I've bought things that look like clothes I've seen on Pinterest or got haircuts based off of pictures I've seen on the app. But never from an advertisement I've seen.

Pinterest creates a homepage for you based off of what you've saved so it is easier to find inspiration for what you like. Sometimes, the pins have links to the products shown which makes it easier for users to buy the product instead of having to search for it. That is one way companies market products on Pinterest that can be very successful. Also, you can view other people's boards, so if someone else has saved the product, this could mean that it is a good item to buy. You can also watch and pin videos that have been posted on Pinterest as well. I have some good makeup tutorial videos saved.

There are also some more interactive kinds of pins. There are image pins, video pins, rich pins, product pins, collection pins, carousel pins, and takes. You also create a shop for your brand on Pinterest to make it easier for users to buy your product and find your brand. You can even checkout in the app! This might be kind of dangerous for me, I might start buying more stuff off of Pinterest now that I know this feature is there.
