Week Two Auditions?

We're only on day two this week and things have already been crazy! Auditions for ONU's The Holiday Spectacular are this week, and the first round of them were tonight. Since I am a Musical Theatre major I have to audition for every performance. My audition slot was from 7:45pm to 7:48pm tonight. They're so short because we only sing a thirty-two bar cut of a song, which is about a minute and a half. I sang a cut of "Santa Baby" , one of the songs featured in Holiday. (We call it Holiday for short instead of saying a way longer name.) There is a group of dancers/singers called the Santa Babies in the show, and I would love to be a part of that group. I think my audition went pretty well! Some people got callbacks for a couple specific roles, but this time it seemed like the majority of us didn't. Plus, there is a dance call tomorrow, which will also help determine who will be who. Basically, during a dance call, we will get together in groups and learn a short dance combination, which we will then perform in small groups. It helps show off how fast we pick up choreography, technique, and the skill of the dancer. So, hopefully that goes pretty well tomorrow!!! I'm super excited. Plus, here's a picture of me and a couple friends at auditions.

These last couple days have also been filled with theatre because I've also started a list of Summer Stocks I'm planning on auditioning for this upcoming summer. Which seems crazy to start this early, but you have to submit self tapes, and then go through a round of callbacks, sometimes more than one. Plus, the theaters all have different timelines, some auditions start super early and some start later in the year. And since I'm not very good at being organized, I'm trying to make an extra effort to stay on top of it. Or else it will never get done. I've always been a procrastinator, so we will see how this goes. Wish me luck!!!

I also start one of the shows I'm in this semester next week. It's called Commedia, and it is Italian theatre. It's kind of similar to Greek or Roman theatre, because it uses masks. But it is also very improv based.  I won't spoil too much yet, as I will probably talk about it more in a later blog, but I cannot wait!

  1. That is such a great picture, Ella! I love seeing all of you guys in your cute audition outfits. I hope your audition went well! And you're right, it seemed like most of us didn't get a callback which was very different from last year. I wonder what they are going to go with for the casting this year. I am so nervous!! You would be such a great Santa Baby. Also, I have started my list for summer stock too so don't worry were all in this together! I'll see you at the dance call tonight!

  2. Hi Ella! I always look forward to watching the Holiday Spectacular every year and this gave me a great look into what happens behind the scenes to prepare for it. This sounds like a lot of work and I don't know about you, but I think it would be too much for me to think about Christmas in the middle of fall. Don't stress yourself out too much and have fun! Best of luck with the rest of your auditions!

  3. I went to the Holiday Spectacular for the first time last year and I loved it! I definitely plan on going again this year! I've never thought about the fact that you would have to start auditioning right when school starts, but that makes sense. It's crazy to think about the amount of work that goes into that. And I know what you mean about things not getting done if you don't start them early, I'm also bad at procrastinating! Especially when it comes for studying for tests. Good luck in the rest of your auditions!

  4. Awww the picture is adorable! I totally agree with you, it has been so hectic navigating auditions along with current productions and thinking about summer stock work. It is very hard to not get overwhelmed with it all in my opinion. Throwing all of that on top of our regular coursework is a big task to complete. But I believe that we will persevere! I do enjoy that Holiday is our first audition of the year so soon because it preps us for the other auditions to come. I'm also super excited to see Commedia! We'll have to talk about all of the details of the process, I am interested to see how the guest director approaches it.
