Holiday Tech Week!

On Sunday, we went into tech for the ONU Holiday Spectacular! For those who don't know what a tech week is, it is the week before a show opens where all technical elements are added, like lights, sound, set, costumes, hair and makeup, props, etc. All the actors have been running the show for a while now, so this week is a time for the tech crew to practice what they do and for the actors to get used to all the new elements as well. On Sunday, rehearsal was about 11 hours. I got there at 11:30 for the crew meeting and we started to set up. I left that night around 10 or 11pm. We had an hour break for dinner and we periodically took ten minute breaks throughout the rehearsal as well so the actors and crew had time to sit down, drink some water and, you know, take a break.

It was a very long day and I was exhausted by the end of the night. As an assistant stage manager, I am in charge of stage left, or SL. I had to learn about where all the set pieces we move go, and just learn what's happening backstage during the show so I can make sure everything goes smoothly. It was a little stressful, but it gets a bit easier every night. I also have the best crew on my side of the stage and we all work together really well to get things done.

I am super excited to see how the rest of tech goes, I think it'll just keep getting smoother too! Holiday opens in Ada tomorrow night and I believe all the shows are sold out, so we are really going to have to make sure everything goes correctly! I'm definitely a little bit nervous for opening night, but I'm sure everything will go very well.

The acting and musical theatre class of '27 also took some pictures by the Christmas tree in the lobby to commemorate the experience. We got a crew picture and then a picture of the cast and crew. I also took some pictures with my best friend Lenore. I can't wait for opening night and I really hope it all goes smoothly.

  1. I hope it all goes smoothly for you guys as well! That sounds like such a busy and exhausting day, but I’m glad you were able to get lots of breaks in between everything. I hope everyone thanks you and the rest of the crew for all of the hard work you put into making these shows magical! And if not then, thank you!!

  3. You are doing so well as an ASM! I've done some ASMing myself and I have to say that Holiday is a beast of a show and I have mad respect for anyone that takes on that job. Your side of the stage has been running so smoothly which is so helpful and impressive! I hope you got some much needed rest on this Thanksgiving break. See you for Lima tech!
