The Social Dilemma

So, to be completely honest I did get my movies mixed around. I got The Social Network and The Social Dilemma mixed up. I really like the movie The Social Network so when I realized that wasn't what we were watching, I was a little disappointed. If you haven't seen it it is about Mark Zuckerberg and how facebook was created. But it isn't a documentary, it is just a movie telling the story of the creation of Facebook. But The Social Dilemma has definitely been an interesting watch.

The Social Dilemma talks about the dangers of social media and how companies basically manipulate us into being addicted to our phones and apps. There are interviews of employees who used to work at some of these companies and can attest to the way that things are run. They send notifications to keep you on your phone and use psychology to keep you addicted.  There were a mix of interviews and staged scenarios to get their point across in this documentary. Honestly, I believe it would have been more impactful without the staged scenarios. They seemed a bit dramatic and far fetched, and it did seem a little out of place to me. Especially since one of the scenes they have created are three of the same guy seeming to be inside of a phone controlling what is sent to a person to get him to keep checking and getting on his phone. It was a little strange. I would've preferred just facts and the interviews. But it was still very interesting and insightful. It really does speak to the dangers of letting yourself get too addicted to your phone and social media. I also liked that they interviewed professors that studied business or psychology to talk about how social media and technology companies run things and how it affects the consumers. It adds another level of reliability to the documentary. I am very interested to see the rest of the documentary to see what else I will learn from this.

  1. It's easy to mix up The Social Network and The Social Dilemma. The documentary shows how social media manipulates users. The interviews are strong, but the staged scenes feel dramatic. Overall, it raises key concerns about social media's impact.
